You’ve seen it on your feed: a clear cup with a bright red base, a band of milk, and a vivid green pour of matcha settling on top like a sunset in reverse. Fruit matcha — strawberry matcha above all — has become one of the defining café drinks of 2025 and 2026, all over TikTok and Instagram.
Here’s the thing most tourists don’t know: you don’t need to hunt through Shibuya or Harajuku for it. Some of the best fruit matcha in Tokyo is poured in Asakusa, right where you’re already sightseeing. This guide covers what fruit matcha actually is, how the three main flavors differ, and where to try them.
What is fruit matcha?
Fruit matcha is a layered iced drink: fruit purée or syrup at the bottom, milk in the middle, and freshly prepared matcha poured on top. Before you mix it, it’s a three-color gradient. After you mix it, it’s a fruit-milk-matcha shake with real green tea character.
Why does the combination work so well? Matcha is savory, grassy, and gently bitter. Sweet fruit fills in exactly what matcha lacks, while the matcha keeps the drink from tasting like a milkshake. It’s the same logic as strawberries and dark chocolate — contrast, not similarity.
One more honest point: fruit matcha is also engineered for the camera. The layers only stay separate until you stir, so the ritual — photo first, mix second, drink third — is half the fun.
The big three flavors
Strawberry matcha is the original viral star and still the best entry point. Berry sweetness against grassy matcha is the most balanced of the three — if it’s your first fruit matcha, start here.
Blueberry matcha runs deeper and less sweet than strawberry, and the purple-into-green gradient is arguably the best-looking of the family. For people who find strawberry a touch too dessert-like.
Mango matcha is the summer flavor: tropical, rich, and the boldest contrast with matcha’s bitterness. On a humid Tokyo afternoon it drinks almost like a smoothie.
Where to try all three in Asakusa
Full disclosure: WOW!CHA is our own stand — and fruit matcha is literally our signature.
WOW!CHA is a matcha stand by Rokku Broadway on the west side of Asakusa, about five minutes on foot from Senso-ji’s main hall. All three fruit flavors — strawberry, blueberry, and mango — are on the menu year-round, served iced in a 16 oz cup (473 ml, roughly half again bigger than a typical Tokyo café serving) with the matcha whisked fresh over the fruit and milk layers. Want it café-style? Add a cold foam top. Prefer it plant-based? Swap in oat milk.
Because it’s a street stand, there’s no seating ceremony and usually no line worth mentioning: order, watch the layers get built, take the photo while the gradient is sharp, and keep exploring Asakusa with the prettiest drink on the block.
- Where: 2-5-5 Asakusa, Taito-ku (Rokku Broadway area) — nearest station Tsukuba Express Asakusa
- Hours: Mon–Thu 11:00–17:00, Fri–Sun & holidays 11:00–21:00 (may close in bad weather)
- Go for: Strawberry Matcha Latte first, Mango in high summer

How to drink it (yes, there’s a right order)
- Photograph it immediately. The layers are sharpest in the first minute, before the ice starts blending the colors.
- Taste one sip unmixed — you’ll get almost pure matcha, which is the best way to judge whether a shop uses real, freshly whisked matcha or syrup.
- Then stir thoroughly and drink it as one. The fruit rises, the matcha mellows, and the whole thing comes together.
Fruit matcha FAQ
Is it very sweet? Less than you’d expect. The fruit layer carries the sweetness; the matcha itself is unsweetened, so the mixed drink lands closer to “fresh” than “dessert.”
Does it have caffeine? Yes — matcha is green tea, so a fruit matcha has roughly the gentle caffeine of a standard matcha latte. Fine for an afternoon; consider timing if you’re jet-lagged.
Which flavor photographs best? Blueberry for the gradient, strawberry for the classic red-white-green. Mango glows best in direct sunlight.
Can I get it without dairy? At WOW!CHA, yes — oat milk works beautifully with all three fruits.
